        Ken Smart and Roger Caudle are the owners of Sunrise Homes in Atchison, Kansas. They have been building homes in the Atchison area for over 30 years. In the past ten years, they have concentrated construction activity in their Brookdale Estates and Heritage Hills, two areas on the northwest edge of the city of Atchison. Brookdale Estates is a 200 acre development of single-family homes with two nice lakes and a walking trail. Bellevue Country Club and Golf Course utilizes a generous portion of the area. The 3 and 4 bedroom homes, situated on large lots, are all unique in design, creating a custom home atmosphere and development. Most lots are 125 feet or wider and average 160 feet deep, creating space between the homes and nice backyards.The lots face a 28-foot wide street with concrete curbing. The area has city sewer and water. The electricity is provided by Evergy and gas is provided by Kansas Gas Service. Electric, cable and phone lines are all underground, allowing for an unobstructed view.

Sunrise Homes is developing a new area called Fairway Townhomes of Brookdale Estates. It is a part of Brookdale Estates, adjacent to the Bellevue Golf Course and overlooking one of the Brookdale lakes. The Fairway area consists of one-story homes with lookout and walkout basements. Sunrise Homes' goal of building a high quality, smaller family home in a good location is evident in these maintenance-free detached townhomes. Lawn mowing and snow removal are included for a minimal monthly fee. 

Some of the structural features of importance to a buyer are the permanent exterior that does not need painting, the heavy duty 50 year warranty roof, double wall construction, and high-quality windows. The homes have nine foot interior walls, nine foot basement walls, R-19 wall insulation, and R-35+ ceiling insulation. High efficiency furnaces and air conditioners, copper water lines, and copper electrical wires are standard. The homes have been designed for young professionals and busy seniors with active lifestyles.

The Sunrise Homes Company is also active in the light commercial field, having completed an office building in the Shannon Industrial Park, a three unit speculative office building at 816 Skyway, and five six-unit apartments in the Heritage Hills area within the last 5 years. Through the years Sunrise Homes has continued to provide quality housing. In August 2008, Sunrise opened two new six unit apartment buildings in the Heritage Hills area. Sunrise also has attractive new homes with two and three bedrooms under construction in Heritage Hills. These are single level or one and one-half story homes ranging in size from 1,500 to 1,900 square feet. Some have additional lower levels finished with 1,000-sq. ft. or more of living space. Roger Caudle serves as the manager of both commercial and residential rental property. Commercial property locations include buildings on the Mall in downtown Atchison and on U.S. 59 Hwy. which runs through Atchison. Residential rental property includes one and two bedroom apartments.
